What you'll experience
Why This Journey Matters
This is not just a journey across geography — it’s a passage into some of the oldest living ways of being human.
South Ethiopia is home to a rare and fragile heritage — more than 20 indigenous groups, each with its own language, ceremonies, and worldview. The Dorze weave homes like beehives. The Konso carve ancestral statues in volcanic stone. The Mursi carry centuries of spiritual tradition in the plates of their lips. The Hamer leap over bulls in rites of passage that echo the earliest stories of identity.
This journey allows you to witness and engage with cultures that continue to live in deep relationship with the land, the seasons, and each other. But it also invites reflection: on dignity, resilience, and what it means to preserve a way of life in the face of change.
Respectful, small-scale tourism — when done right — offers a vital way to support cultural continuity, education, and sustainable development in these communities. Traveling here is both a privilege and a responsibility.
Program
Depart early for a scenic drive south (515 km), encountering diverse cultures along the way — from the Gurage to the Wolaita. Visit Dorze Village, where towering beehive-shaped huts and handwoven textiles reflect a centuries-old highland lifestyle. Meet the Dorze people and learn how they spin local cotton, craft bamboo homes, and maintain a proud identity in harmony with nature.
In the morning, cruise across Lake Chamo, famed for its massive Nile crocodiles, hippos, and rich birdlife. Visit the “crocodile market,” where nature’s drama unfolds in full view. Continue to Konso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Settle into a local lodge for a night of cultural exploration.
Walk through Konso’s ancient terraced villages, where volcanic rock walls protect intricate homes and sacred sites. Learn about waga statues — stone carvings commemorating warriors and ancestors. After a picnic lunch, head toward Jinka, gateway to the Omo Valley.
Drive through Mago National Park, home to savanna wildlife and sweeping plains. Arrive in Mursi Village, where women wear ceremonial lip plates and body art speaks volumes. Spend time with community members in a respectful and culturally sensitive setting. Overnight in a lodge near Jinka.
Visit the Hamer, one of the most expressive and proud tribes of the Omo. If the timing is right, witness a bull-jumping ceremony — a powerful rite of passage for young men, accompanied by the rhythmic Evangadi dance and vibrant community gatherings. Later, drive to Arba Minch for a restful evening.
Enjoy the changing landscapes as you drive north back to Addis Ababa (515 km), or opt for a short flight if preferred. End your journey with a warm farewell dinner and reflections on the stories, voices, and connections you’ve gathered along the way.
