What you'll experience

Taste the story of coffee, where it all began

On this 10-day journey, you’ll trace the path of the coffee bean from its wild birth in Keffa to its refined legacy in Yirga Cheffe and Harar. Along the way, you’ll meet farmers and roasters, sip world-renowned brews, and explore cities rich in culture, history, and hospitality.

Program

Day 1
Welcome to Addis Ababa

Arrive in Ethiopia’s highland capital, whose name means “New Flower.” Nestled in the Entoto mountains at 2,500 meters, Addis Ababa offers jacaranda-lined streets, bustling markets, and a mild climate year-round. Depending on your arrival time and energy, opt for a relaxed city tour, visiting the National Museum, the Merkato—the largest open-air market in Africa—or a local coffee house to begin your immersion into Ethiopia’s rich coffee culture.

Day 2
To Jimma: Into the Heart of Coffee Country (345 km)

Depart early for Jimma, passing through Weliso and the traditional villages of the Gurage people. Witness distinctive architecture, food traditions, and daily life before arriving in Jimma, a key coffee hub. Visit local farms and participate in a hands-on tasting session to discover who brews the best cup.

Day 3
Journey to Keffa: The Origin of Arabica

Travel deeper into Ethiopia’s lush southwest to Keffa—the ancestral home of Coffea arabica. This is where the wild coffee forests still thrive. Explore smallholder farms and learn how the landscape, altitude, and traditional techniques influence the flavor and soul of each bean.

Day 4
Bebeka Coffee Estate: Scale and Legacy

Take a scenic drive to Bebeka, home to Ethiopia’s largest coffee plantation. Walk among orderly rows of arabica and learn about large-scale cultivation, processing, and grading. Return to Jimma in the evening, savoring the contrast between commercial and traditional approaches.

Day 5
Through Sidama to Awassa (450 km)

Make your way to the Rift Valley town of Awassa, stopping in the renowned coffee-growing regions of Sidama and Yirga Cheffe. These areas are famous for producing some of the world’s most delicate and aromatic coffees. Meet farmers and learn about cooperative systems that support quality and sustainability.

Day 6
Exploring Yirga Cheffe (121 km)

Return to Yirga Cheffe for a full day of coffee immersion. Visit processing stations and cooperatives, where beans are sorted, washed, and sun-dried. Learn the nuances of the region’s fruity, floral profiles and engage in a tasting session with local coffee masters. Head back to Awassa for the night.

Day 7
Awassa to Adama: Lakes and Landscapes (186 km)

After a relaxed breakfast, drive north to Adama (Nazreth), stopping en route at Lake Ziway. Enjoy birdwatching and perhaps spot hippos lazing in the shallows, while sipping a lakeside coffee with a view.

Day 8
Road to Harar: Into the East (325 km)

Cross Ethiopia’s diverse landscapes to reach Harar, the walled city of saints and storytellers. Harar is considered the fourth holiest city in Islam and a cultural island in the eastern highlands, known for its tight alleys, colorful homes, and deep-rooted coffee culture.

Day 9
Harar: Coffee, Culture, and Hyenas

Explore Harar’s 82 mosques, hidden shrines, and centuries-old homes with intricately carved interiors. Visit traditional coffee houses, taste the spicy and bold Harrar beans, and witness the famous hyena feeding ritual at dusk—an ancient tradition now turned into a surreal evening spectacle.

Day 10
Return to Addis Ababa (510 km)

Begin your journey back to the capital, reflecting on the places and people that bring Ethiopia’s coffee to life. Upon arrival in Addis, you’ll be transferred to your hotel or the airport for departure.
